2025 Flower Crew (Seasonal, Full-time)
Hours per week: 40+ hours per week
Anticipated start & end dates: April - October
Weekly schedule: Monday - Friday (monthly Saturday shift)
Compensation: $18/hr.
Job Description:
Flower crew positions will include work within Bumbleroot’s entire field operation with a focus on flower production, flower harvest and bouquet-making. You will participate in all daily activities on the farm including (but not limited to) seeding, transplanting, weeding, trellising, harvesting and processing flowers. This position also includes work with the vegetable side of the operation, especially in the shoulder seasons. You will be expected to set up irrigation, wash totes and flower buckets, make bouquets for our flower CSA and farmstand, pack wholesale orders, and interact with customers.
We sell certified organic flowers through a flower CSA, farm stand, and to wholesale customers (grocers, floral designers and florists across the state). We grow over 50 varieties of cut flowers, each with their own production techniques and harvest standards, so a high level of focus, attention to detail and memory is a must for our flower crew members. We harvest blooms from April through October; in peak season multiple days per week are spent harvesting thousands of stems for many hours at a time. Work is fast-paced and very physically demanding - as gorgeous as flower farming is, it can also be monotonous and tough on the body.
Requirements:
The ideal candidates for our flower crew have at least one full season of flower farming experience. Knowledge of growing and harvesting flowers at a commercial scale is preferred. We are looking for team members with a strong interest in flower farming, a willingness to learn the production specifics and quality standards of all of the varieties we grow, and high attention to detail. The ideal candidate can work at a fast pace and has strong organizational skills and stamina. After a training period, you will be expected to navigate a pick sheet, participate in record keeping, move rapidly from one task to the next, and have a clear understanding of work space organization and workflow.
We are seeking candidates who bring the following qualities:
Efficiency and strong work ethic
Focus and attention to detail and quality standards
Excellent listening and communication skills
Positive attitude, kindness and compassion - even in the face of grueling weather and long harvest days
Enthusiasm and eagerness to learn and grow as a flower farmer
Openness to feedback
Organization and sense of initiative
A willingness to work both independently and in a team setting
Endurance and stamina
Must be able to lift 50lbs. and be on your feet for 5-6 hours straight. We do not offer housing so reliable transportation to and from the farm is necessary (we are located 25 minutes from downtown Portland), along with a valid driver’s license for operating farm vehicles to/from fields and on delivery routes.
Work Environment & Schedule:
The Bumbleroot flower team is small but mighty! Our flower crew is made up of 4-5 farmers and works in tandem with our larger farm crew. You will work closely with Bumbleroot owners and managers on a daily basis. Some tasks will be done independently, but most time will be spent working in small teams.
Flower crew members work 8-9 hours a day, 5 days a week with a one hour unpaid lunch break. In addition, all team members work monthly Saturday shifts as part of a rotation. We generally work a 7am-4pm schedule with earlier start times on harvest days during peak season (6am, 2-3 days per week). We work in all weather conditions and the work is physically demanding.
We pay overtime for every hour worked over 40 hours per week, offer paid holidays (Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor day), and provide paid time off in addition to other farm benefits (food and flowers from the farm, discounts on local products, workers compensation insurance, birthday lunches, etc).
