LATE SEASON FLOWER/FARM CREW

Hours per week: Part-time or full-time opportunities available
Dates:
August - October
Weekly schedule: TBD, early morning weekday harvests required (6am & 7am starts)
Compensation:
$18.50/hr.

Our late season farm crew position will include work within Bumbleroot’s entire field operation with a focus on flower harvest. You will spend much of your time harvesting flowers but will participate in all daily activities on the farm including (but not limited to) weeding, trellising, and processing flowers and vegetables, along with other farm projects. You will be expected to wash totes and flower buckets, pack orders, make bouquets and assist with shoulder season tasks such as harvesting storage crops, digging dahlia tubers, and clearing fields of irrigation, trellising, etc. Our focus in September is dahlia harvest which occurs daily!

We sell our crops to wholesale customers (grocers, floral designers and florists across the state), through our CSA and at our Saturday farmstand. We grow many flower varieties with a focus on dahlias - in August and September multiple days per week are spent harvesting thousands of stems for many hours at a time in all weather conditions. Work is fast-paced and very physically demanding - as gorgeous as flower farming is, it can also be monotonous and tough on the body.

Requirements:

The ideal candidates for our flower crew have at least one full season of farming experience. We are looking for team members with a willingness to learn the quality standards of many flower varieties and a strong attention to detail. The ideal candidate can work at a fast pace and has strong organizational skills and stamina. After a training period, you will be expected to navigate a pick sheet, participate in record keeping, move rapidly from one task to the next, and have a clear understanding of work space organization and workflow.

We are seeking candidates who bring the following qualities:

  • Efficiency and strong work ethic

  • Focus and attention to detail and quality standards

  • Excellent listening and communication skills

  • Positive attitude, kindness and compassion - even in the face of grueling weather and long harvest days

  • Enthusiasm and eagerness to learn and grow as a flower farmer

  • Openness to feedback

  • Organization and sense of initiative

  • A willingness to work both independently and in a team setting

  • Endurance and stamina

Must be able to lift 50lbs. and be on your feet for 5-6 hours straight. We do not offer housing so reliable transportation to and from the farm is necessary (we are located 25 minutes from downtown Portland), along with a valid driver’s license for operating farm vehicles to/from fields and on delivery routes.

Work Environment & Schedule:

The Bumbleroot flower team is small but mighty! Our flower crew is made up of 4-5 farmers and works in tandem with our larger farm crew. You will work closely with Bumbleroot owners and managers on a daily basis. Some tasks will be done independently, but most time will be spent working in small teams.

Flower crew members work 8-9 hours a day, 5 days a week with a one hour unpaid lunch break. We work a 7am-4pm schedule with earlier start times on harvest days during peak season (6am on Tuesdays & Fridays). We work in all weather conditions and the work is physically demanding.

We pay overtime for every hour worked over 40 hours per week, offer paid holidays, and provide paid time off in addition to other farm benefits (food and flowers from the farm, discounts on local products, workers compensation insurance, birthday lunches, etc).

Bumbleroot is an inclusive workplace and an equal opportunity employer. We strive for a culture of connectedness and believe that we are able to grow and learn better as a diverse team. We love to laugh, work hard, break farm records, and share our latest book and recipe adventures. We prioritize efficiency and productivity in all of our daily tasks and value kindness, cooperation and cultivating a healthy quality of life for our team members.

We currently cultivate 7 acres of certified organic vegetables and cut flowers. We use a combination of tractor-based practices as well as no-till and reduced tillage methods and our entire operation is certified organic. All planting, weeding, harvesting, and processing is done by hand. In 2024 we employed 12 farmers - about half year-round and half seasonal - and these folks are the heart of our farm. We utilize 6 high tunnels and 6 caterpillar tunnels to extend our growing season into the shoulder seasons and winter months.

We offer competitive wages & benefits for our employees. For seasonal staff, we offer paid time off, overtime pay, paid holidays during peak season, workers compensation insurance, Labor Movement workshops and training, free vegetables and flowers from the farm, and employee discounts for products we buy in from other local farms and food producers. There is room for growth at Bumbleroot and potential for year-round employment based on performance and the farm’s needs. Returning employees are offered additional benefits.

Our mission is to connect people in our community with the land and the food that sustains us. We are focused on climate resilience and soil health and are exploring how to incorporate no-till practices and perennial crops into the farm. We are committed to renewable energy, community-building, and equity. If this sounds like the type of place you’d like to work, check out our job descriptions and send us an email! We’d love to hear from you.
