2025 Vegetable Crew

Vegetable Crew (Seasonal, Full-time)

Hours per week: 40+ hours per week
Anticipated start & end dates:
April - October
Weekly schedule: Monday - Friday (monthly Saturday shift)
Compensation:
$18/hr.

Job Description:

This position will be focused on vegetable production, harvest, and sales. Farm hands participate in all daily farm activities including but not limited to: seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, setting up irrigation, washing and packing vegetables, CSA and market preparation, deliveries, cleanup and more. You will be expected to work CSA and farm stand shifts as a part of your regular schedule. Time will be spent in the greenhouse, in the wash/pack house, in the field and as a public-facing liaison at our farm stand. Work is fast-paced and physically demanding.

Bumbleroot markets our vegetables through a 200 member CSA, at our weekly farmstand, and to our restaurant and wholesale partners in the greater Portland area. We also grow certified organic seedlings which we sell at plant sales throughout the month of May. Our weekly workflow is organized around harvests - our big harvest days are Tuesdays and Fridays, while Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are spent on field work and farm projects. We value collaboration, positivity and hard work - farming can be very physically taxing but we also love to have fun. We strive to create a work environment that is well organized and supportive, even in the busy moments!

Requirements:

Candidates must have at least one year of farming experience on a commercial farm. We are looking for candidates with the following attributes:

  • strong work ethic

  • positive attitude and enthusiasm

  • excellent listening and communication skills

  • ability to work with efficiency in a team setting, day after day

  • openness to feedback

  • self-motivation and eagerness to learn and develop as a farmer

  • stamina and drive to work hard

  • attention to quality and detail

We value positivity, focus, efficiency and effort. Commercial vegetable farming can be fulfilling, but it is very physically demanding and can be monotonous and repetitive. Applicants must be able to lift 50lbs. and be on your feet for 6 hours straight. We do not offer housing so reliable transportation to and from the farm is necessary (we are located 25 minutes from downtown Portland), along with a valid driver’s license for driving farm vehicles in the field and on delivery routes.

Work Environment & Schedule:

Bumbleroot’s seasonal veggie crew is made up of 8-10 farmers with varying levels of experience and specialization on the farm, and we sometimes combine forces with the flower team for big group projects. We have regular meetings to discuss priorities and workflow for the day/week and we value strong communication, respect, and clarity of expectations in the workplace. There will be occasional independent work but most of your time will be spent working in teams led by managers and farm owners.

The job will be 8-9 hours a day, 5 days a week with a one hour unpaid lunch break. You will be expected to work one Saturday shift per month as a part of a rotation. Start times are early on harvest days during peak season (6am, 2 days per week), and other days of the week we start at 7:00am. We work in all weather conditions.

We pay overtime for every hour worked over 40 hours per week, and we offer paid holidays and paid time off in addition to other farm benefits (food and flowers from the farm, discounts on local products sold at our farmstand, workers compensation insurance, etc).
